What Is Herpes Simplex?
There are several kinds of Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) strains. Among them is Herpes Simplex Type 2, a sexually transmitted virus that is also known as Genital Herpes. Listed below is general herpes information on the most common strains.
Herpes Simplex Virus - Type 1 (HSV1 - "Oral Herpes")
Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), also known as oral herpes, is a common cause of infection and lead to skin legions around the mouth and sometimes in the mucous membrane of the mouth. Symptoms of genital herpes are grouped bunches of blisters on an inflamed base of skin, which flare up periodically. HSV is also the virus responsible for common cold sores around the mouth and can be transmitted through oral fluids through kissing, eating and drinking from contaminated utensils. Recent studies have also shown that HSV can be cross-infected into genital herpes or HSV2, usually through oral sex. As with all herpes strains, once the individual is infected, the virus resides in the body permanently. Recent studies show that 85% of people in the United States have been exposed to oral herpes.
Herpes Simplex Virus - Type 2 (HSV2 - "Genital Herpes")
Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV2), also known as genital herpes, is similar to oral herpes, yet attacks the genital area. Common areas of infection for HSV 2 are the shaft of the penis, scrotum, inner thighs and anus for men. Common areas for females are the cervix, labia, vagina, inner thighs, and anus. It is estimated that 25% of the United States population is infected with genital herpes and 86 million people infected worldwide. This strain of herpes is highly transmittable through sexual contact.
Zoster Herpes Virus ("Chickenpox and Shingles")
Herpes Zoster is the herpes strain that causes chickenpox and shingles. This strain of herpes is commonly found in most children and travels through the blood to the skin. Patients of chickenpox or shingles can spread the virus by sneezing and coughing, which allows the virus to travel in tiny droplets expelled by the infected individuals. Once this virus causes an outbreak, the virus commonly becomes inactive in the body, often for a lifetime. Reoccurrence of outbreak is possible but usually rare unless the patient has a lowered immune system, due to disease or immune lowering medication.
Herpes Treatments
Treatment for genital herpes, as well as other strains of herpes, does not cure the disease, but lessens the duration and intensity of symptoms during the outbreak period and may lessen the frequency of future outbreaks. Valtrex oral medication can be taken during the onset of an outbreak to significantly reduce the intensity and symptoms of the disease. Zovirax topical cream can reduce the intensity of the blistering stage of the disease. Other productive treatments for pain relief of legions include warm baths and gentle cleansing of the skin with soap and water.
